Curtain Call

Yesterday was the final day of Christmas decorating in the Dagley household and as such it was a hectic day. There were boxes to put up and ornaments to hang, garland to string and candles to light. Also, it was a day designated for some cleaning, scrubbing, and in general making the house less dusty and sticky than it was. Yes, the fumes from the Swiffer and Clorox mixed beautifully with the aroma of apple spice candles to create that perfect holiday scent.
Since I was so busy yesterday Will had a lot of play time by himself on the activity mat, the exer-saucer and the blanket. I would do chores with him in the room and talk to him, but there was not a lot of laying around tickling his legs and hearing him giggle/squeal to where only dogs could here his sound.
After a three hour nap (his, not mine, I wish I could get a three hour nap), I fed Will and placed him in the activity gym. I then went to put something in the garage that took about 5 minutes. As I brandied back through the front door (I don't just walk around during the Christmas season, I brandy about jauntily) I made my way back into the living area and kitchen and noticed that one of our drapes was moving quite actively.
It was then that I realized that my son has rolled at least three body lengths and was on his tummy, wearing the biggest smile I have ever seen, kicking the drapes as though he was swimming in the Olympics.
I strode into the room just in time to see the final drape holding apparatus give way and the entire 10 foot drape came down onto Will, covering his bottom half, and clearly startling a child that had no idea why the heavens had just fallen onto his behind.
Fortunately, due to modern technology and Apple's iPhone Camera, I was able to take a photo right after the incident. It made my day!

Real Food?

Over the last two weeks, Will has begun his journey into what the doctor calls solid food. I don't understand how squash puree can be called solid food, but I didn't go to medical school. It looks like a pumpkin exploded into a child size cup. But, Mommy and I are not the target audience for this food, and Will seems to really enjoy it. On week one we gave him whole grain rice cereal (see post below for results) and we are almost finished with week two's journey through the squash patch. Sunday will begin a study in how to clean mushed apples out of a baby's hair.

I have posted some pictures below of Will enjoying the rice cereal and squash. Below those are other photos we have taken recently, since we haven't posted any in a while. Enjoy fellow FOW's (Fans of William)!

Will, What's that in your hair?

A few weeks ago, during an afternoon play session, I had set Will in a Bumbo for a little time for Dad to write a few e-mails. If you are unaware of the Bumbo product, it is a plastic seat that holds a child in an upright position so that they can develop back muscles and also play sitting up. It also provides them an aerial view of their toes that Will just loves.

Will loves to play in his Bumbo and on this occasion was dutifully inspecting a Baby Einstein Caterpillar rattle with the inside of his mouth. He would quietly examine the bug, then fiercely shove it into his mouth and gnaw on it like a starved lion. It is quite entertaining to watch as a parent.

As Will was actively engaged in his oral dismantling of a child's toy, it hit me. Literally, a noxious odor penetrated every cilia of my nostrils. I knew this smell, but couldn't quite place it. It was at this point that I turned around to jokingly ask Will if he knew what the smell was. Then it happened.

I am sure parents are supposed to be trained for this kind of thing. There should be a calm reaction, a sense of purpose during this moment...but not for this parent. My survival instincts took over. I knew what this was. I had heard about this, but I thought it only happened to other peoples kid's. No, this was it, Will had poopie in his hair.

Now, I am not a physicist by any means, but it goes against everything I know about gravity to believe that the poop had somehow climbed up his back and reached his head. I simply was unaware of it's vine-like ability to engulf an entire child.

I acted quickly. Jumping from the chair, I removed Will from the Bumbo by placing my hands under his arms, careful to avoid any visible traces of the recent explosion. I pointed my nose downwind, held the baby at full arms length, and made a dash for nursery. I looked like Barry Sanders heading toward the end zone. I was spinning around chairs, side stepping laundry, and I may have had to stiff arm a lamp. All with a child giggling at the events. Still at arms length, I laid him on the changing table. Finally, the explosion and I would meet face to face.

As I laid Will down on the changing pad, I took a millisecond to assess the situation. It was bad. It had clearly soaked the the onesie and the pants. I would have to start a small fire and burn them, or contact whichever federal authority dealt with nuclear waste. I didn't think our washing machine could handle this. I started to remove the clothing only to realize that in my haste, I was making the problem worse. At this juncture, it was like I was a child who was finger-painting. I was spreading it everywhere. It was on the changing pad cover, the clothes, the cabinet, the baby, and worst of all...it was on me.

Finally, the clothes were peeled off and placed safely in a hazardous materials container (or on the floor) and I had made it down to the diaper, or what used to be the diaper. I turned my head away, took a deep breath, turned back around and started to unlatch the diaper. It was a bad sign that the cute little Elmo on the front was covered in poop and had turned from his adorable red into more of an amber hue.

There was no white space left on this diaper. I asked Will what he had eaten, but I knew. This is what whole grain rice cereal does to babies. Will had the cleanest colon in the city. Meanwhile, he had the dirtiest exterior I had ever seen. I ended up using two other diapers to contain the mess and wrap up the soiled Elmo Diaper. I placed it gingerly in the Diaper Genie, hoping the plastic on the sides of the disposal unit wouldn't start to melt. After a tub of wipes was used, I felt he was clean enough to finally take a bath.

This is where my bravery shone through. I knew what had to be done. I swept up Will, poop and all into, my arms. My shirt would likely never be worn again. We marched into the bathroom, I turned on the faucet of the tub, plopped him down and proceeded to scrub every inch of my 5 month old with a diligence I have never possessed. I got in the crannies and nooks, crevices and cracks. Mr. Clean himself could not have done more scrubbing.

As I set Will on the towel to dry him off, he smiled and giggled. Apparently, this is just the most fun he has had in a while. I get a new diaper on him, and a new onesie and some pants. And the whole time he giggled. It is amazing that one little giggle can make you forget all the cleaning you just did for your little child. And I can really only think one thing...Dad needs a shower.

First flight...to Seattle!

Well, we took Will on his first airplane flight! We flew to Seattle on October 8th...of course we choose a 5 hour flight to be his first flight! Will was a total charmer to all of the flight attendants. They just wanted to eat him up the moment we stepped on the plane! Before we even left the runway, Will just fell asleep in his Daddy's arms without a peep. He slept for the first 2 hours of the flight! As he played for the next hour or so and after 2 successful diaper changes in the airplane bathroom, all of the people sitting around us kept complimenting us on how well behaved our child was. Of course, I start getting a big head about the situation. I should know by know that as soon as I feel really confident, things make a turn - and not usually in my favor. I decided since it was Will's normal time to go to sleep for the night, I would rock him a little bit so he would fall asleep. Well, since I was sitting in the middle seat, Will kept kicking the guy next to me. I tried switching seats with Sam, but Will just started wailing. UGH! So much for our perfect child! After a bit of effort, a few laps up and down the aisle and lots of shhhh-ing in his ear, Will finally fell asleep. Thank goodness!

We arrived in Seattle to find Grandmommie and Granddaddy waiting anxiously to see their grandson - oh and their daughter and son-in-law, but let's be honest...we take the back seat now! Will was a champ for them and just smiled for about an hour straight as we navigated our way through the airport and baggage claim.

The next night, I had my high school reunion, so we left Will for the very first time. Although, we felt very comfortable since his Grandmommie had already proven her baby whisperer skills. I think he was excited to spend time away from us since there was finally someone who understood everything he did and knew exactly what to do! (by the way Mom, why are you holding out on us? You needed to share these tricks MONTHS ago!) Anway...I digress. Sam and I had a wonderful time and actually went on a mini date-before we arrived at my reunion!
Will did so great all weekend and just adored his Grandmommie and Granddaddy.

Here are a few pictures we took while we were visiting!

Apologies and Updates

Dear Family, Friends, and people who found us through Google by accident,

I want to apologize for our long time between posts. So much has happened! Will has started driving and will be graduating high school in a few weeks and is on his way to Baylor (raise a child in the way he should go...). OK, he hasn't grown up that much, but it feels like it. It is amazing how fast little ones grow up.

He has developed a wonderful little personality and a great pouty lip. The lip thing he gets from his mother, and it has a very high success rate on daddy from both of them. Will has also discovered the joys of rolling over from back to front and front to back. He is quite the mobile child. Ahh, the days where we could set our baby down in one place and expect to find him there again are over.

Will also had a big accomplishment last night, perhaps his greatest of all...He slept through the night! Mommy and Daddy were so proud, and rested. I hope this is a trend and not just a one time teaser. Other trends I hope get developed include fewer "poopie blowouts" and fewer incidents involving the changing station and a "baby fountain".

Anyhow, Team Dagley is doing very well and I am posting some pictures of Will's growth with this blog so that you all may ogle his awesomeness and cuteness, a constant hobby of his parents.

PS - Your query of the day for pondering: Why doesn't Pampers make a diaper that actually holds everything in it? My soiled white polo and I would like to know...

FREEDOM!!

A few weeks ago, Will finally convinced us it was time to get rid of his swaddle. Since Sam and I have a video monitor, luckily we saw it on the monitor first and got a real good laugh in before I went in to "rescue" our little man. Here is what we found:

Yes...you're right. He worked so hard to free himself from the swaddle that somehow he got his entire arm out of his long-sleeved jammies! Haha!

Future Career Path

I am assuming that all parents with young children look for possible clues as to what their child might grow up to become. Will he or she be a doctor, a lawyer, a scientist, a professor? The possibilities are endless. Of course, many children often follow their parents into one of their chosen professions. Having just completed law school, I look for Will to object to things or try to haggle over his binky time. But, as of yet, he has shown no interest in the law.

However, there are hints that Will is going to follow his Mommy's path into the plumbing arts. There have been some indications that he would like to grow up to be a man who understands the delicate practice of porcelain sculptures. I don't want to read too much into it, but I feel that the evidence is fairly pointed in one direction, and fortunately, we have that evidence on camera:

I mean, I haven't seen crack like that since we replaced the plumbing in the tub in the master bathroom. If that rear cleavage is any indication, we are going to have a caulking connoisseur in our midst in no time. I think it is quite evident that drains and S-pipes are going to be his lego's. Now he is filling diapers and soon he will be snaking potties.

We promise to fill you in on any more early career developments we see!

The Little Man Groweth...

Forgive me if my typing is less than stellar, I have just had my wisdom teeth removed and I am feeling less than wisdom-y. But, Jenny and I realized that we haven't posted any photos of Will recently, and there are photo's to post! Please feel free to ooh and aah, as well as ogle, at the cuteness that is William. I know I never hesitate to do so. Enjoy!

Out of the Abyss...

Finally, the Texas Bar Examination is behind me! After spending three days staring at the same frightened individuals across the plywood desk in the George R. Brown Convention Center, I am finally free. I have to say, the George R. Brown is a terrible place to take an exam. The proctor sounded like Charlie Brown's mother on a loudspeaker (" Wha Wha Texas Wha Exam wha wha don't worry wha wha wha rest of your life wha...") and the lighting gave me a lovely orange glow when I left the building. All in all, I am thrilled it is over. I also learned that a tort is not just a delicious pastry, but apparently is some sort of legal term. I hope that wasn't important.

Back home, Will had grown lots in three days and can now do advanced math and is reading at a 12 week level, even though he is only 8 weeks old. Next week I am hoping to teach him how to mow the lawn. I figure as long as he can hold on to the handle and dangle his legs, the lawn mower can do most of the work. All joking aside (which is always hard), he has gotten bigger!

Yesterday, we took Will to see his Pediatrician and his needle happy "nurse". The doctor is an amazing guy who does an excellent job. Then the nurse decided it was time to give will his shots. As she put the needle into his thigh, there was a second of shock, and then his face turned into a bright red, wrinkly roma tomato. It was heartbreaking. It was also ear breaking. I didn't know anything that small could make noise that big. I think it measured on the Richter scale in College Station. Then, the nurse decided that was so much fun, she stuck him two more times for show. Will and Mommy recovered while Daddy paid and then the whole family headed to James Coney Island. Will decided just to have milk, so Mommy and Daddy ate chili dogs.

All in all, Will is doing very well and we are adjusting to life after the bar. We are off on a short vacation this week to let Will see Salano Ranch for the first time, and then back to the grind! I hope you are all well and I will post pictures soon!

Happy 6 week birthday, Will!

Wow! I can't believe how fast time flies! Today our little Will (not so little anymore) is 6 weeks old! Everyone has told me that if you can make it through to the 6 week mark, things get a lot easier. I had to email my friend Ashley last week to see if she could spell out just exactly what we have to look forward to after this milestone! So far as of 8am, just more spit up and fun surprises in the diaper department! Buy stock in Pampers now people!
I took Will to the doctor this past Wednesday to get a "20-point inspection" due to me being a paranoid mommy, and discovered we have a very healthy 10 lb 14 oz baby boy! Yup...that is +2 lbs 2oz in 3 weeks. No wonder my arm muscles are beginning to look like I'm training for the ironman competition! He goes back at 8 weeks for his first round of shots (eek!) so it will be fun to see how much he has beefed up between now and then! Dr. Y seemed very pleased at how well Will is eating...especially since he hasn't had a single bottle yet! I think it is now safe to say that we can look forward to Will being a future Baylor offensive lineman.

We had a great 4th of July celebration and went over to a friend's house to celebrate. That was the longest Will and I have been out of the house. Thankfully they have a little girl themselves and understood the 2-hour feeding schedule for Prince William! We were gone for 2 feedings which was a huge milestone for me! We didn't make it long enough to enjoy the fireworks, but we had a wonderful display that could be seen from our house too! I am very thankful that we have a child that is not affected by loud noises - he slept right through those VERY loud fireworks!

My parents and my Grandma came back through town last week and we enjoyed every minute of their visit! It was a short visit, but we had a blast. Great Grandma Fishburn loved holding little man and was so thrilled to meet her 5th great grandchild! Their timing worked out perfectly for their visit since it was Daddy Dags' birthday celebration that same weekend! We ended up having 15 people over to celebrate, and it also gave several people the chance to meet Will for the first time! It was fun to have both sides of our families in town to celebrate Daddy Dags' birthday!

While my folks and grandma were in town, Will started smiling (genuinely, not just when things are "happening" down south) and cooing a lot! It is so rewarding to see him smile, and I was glad that they were in town to experience it! He also has some crazy neck control which is just amazing. He started holding his head up quite well at 11 days old and it just gets stronger and stronger every day!

Will's first attempt in the Baby Bjorn (about 4-1/2 weeks old)

All smiles while playing on the activity gym!

On another note, Sam has been studying really hard for the bar exam. We are 8 days away from the day it starts, so he has been living at the library at Rice University. Everyone, please keep him in your prayers! This annoying little exam is life changing, so we need all the prayers we can get!!!! I promise, once he is done taking the exam, we will get back to him posting the more entertaining blogs! Until then, you will just have to make do with mine :)

Happy Independence Day!

Today is Will's first Fourth of July and, naturally, our first as parents! As a special treat to us, Will slept for five and a half hours last night! That is the first time he has accomplished that feat, and Mommy and Daddy were very excited, and rested, this morning! On another note, Will decided to have an early fireworks show yesterday, resulting in a wet onesie, a soaked shirt on Daddy, three ruined diapers, and a lot of crying on every end. It was an epic blowout that I am sure many fireworks stands would be jealous of.

Mommy and Daddy are doing very well and enjoying each and every day with Will. He is such a blessing and is starting to become very alert. On the plus side, it is fun to see him explore the world with his eyes, on the down side, we now have no idea at all what he is cooing or screaming at. It could be a wet diaper or a ceiling fan. This has turned into quite the guessing game between Mommy and Daddy as to what he might be seeing.

Lastly, from the Dagley's of Sugar Land to all of you, we wish you a great Independence Day and we thank all those who have served and sacrificed to make this the greatest country on earth with freedoms that so many others do not have. God Bless America!

A Wonderful Cap...and My Declining Vocabulary

Family and Friends, lend me your eyes! Father's Day was a wonderful event. I was blessed to spend my first Father's Day with my dad and my grandfather. It was a true honor to spend the day with the two men who have taught me what a father figure really should be. They are wonderful men, amazing fathers, and I am blessed to have them in my life.

During the weekend, I got an especially awesome gift. My grandmother, Mimi, knitted an awesome truckers cap for Will. I had one like it when I was Will's age and it was so amazing that she took the time to knit another cap for my son. She is an incredible woman, and a great matriarch of the Dagley family. She also makes some wicked awesome chicken fried steak, so if your ever in Waco, drop by and try some, and remember, gratuity is always appreciated (I am assuming I get a cut for this ad...) Anyhow, we had the opportunity to snap some photo's of Will in the hat. I have to say, he has some Clark Gable-esque qualities already in this hat. Parent's, lock up your daughters! The photo's of our handsome, debonair young man are below.

On a final note, I have noticed a recent trend in my language that is quite disturbing. I have noticed that my generally broad and robust legally inspired vocabulary has been replaced by words like "binky", "cute 'lil' onesie", "oooooo big poopie", and "that's a big spitup for a little boy". I am asking you all for your help. I need a heart transplant, because apparently mine has been melted by my little son (I am assuming the heart and tongue are connected in some way). If you all hear me saying "Yes you are" or "can you burp for Daddy?" please take me aside for an intervention. I need help people.

Please enjoy the photo's below, I know I will, because they are just so cutsie wootsie....oh no.
