Random Event of the Day: Elevator Edition

This afternoon I had to go to a doctor's appointment and, naturally, Will came with me. Don't worry, everything is fine, at least physically. Mentally, the doctors seems undecided. Anyhow, while I was in the waiting room, wondering why I was the only person there under 90, I began to notice that the waiting room music channel was playing "Unbreak My Heart", the famous 1996 Toni Braxton hit. I didn't really pay much attention as I was playing with Will, so I went about my business.

After my visit, I made my way back to the elevator pushing the stroller merrily and making noises and faces at Will. As we entered the elevator on the 4th floor by ourselves, I pressed the button for the first floor and away we went. About the time the doors closed on the elevator, it hit me. At this point I should mention that sometimes at certain places in public, like grocery stores, shopping malls, etc. I get the urge to dance...or sing.

Somewhere from the files of my mind, it burst forth. I broke into a rousing chorus of Unbreak My Heart. Unfortunately, this musical urge hit me just as the elevator stopped on the second floor, completely unbeknownst to me. The doors lurched open, and there stood a mother and her young son, eyes staring right at me as I finished the "MYYYYYYY HEAAAAARRRRTTTT" portion of the song.

They didn't move. I didn't move. Will didn't move. The other child was clearly afraid of the man in the bright pink shirt hitting the high notes to a Toni Braxton song. I was beginning to sweat.

I assumed the doors were going to close and then I could wallow in my embarrassment. But no, the mother and son boarded the elevator, albeit in the farthest corner away from me, and we all went down together.

At least I gave them a good story for the dinner table. And Will loved my singing...
